Bini
Background
Formation and Training: BINI is a Filipino girl group formed by ABS-CBN’s Star Hunt Academy in 2018. The members went through two years of intensive training in singing, dancing, and performance, modeled after the K-pop training system. The final lineup consists of eight members: Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena
Group Name: The group’s name BINI was inspired from the tagalog word binibini, which means “young lady” or “maiden”
Group Vision: “Embody the idea of a modern Filipina – sweet, fierce, independent, and informed”
Pre-Debut and Debut: In November 2020, BINI was introduced with a pre-debut single, a modern rendition of “Da Coconut Nut”, showcasing their lively and spirited approach to music. BINI officially debuted in June 2021 with the single “Born to Win.” Their debut marked a significant step for P-pop girl groups and was supported by a strong promotional push from ABS-CBN, building anticipation for their entry into the P-pop scene.
Rise in Popularity: In October 2021, BINI released their first album, also titled Born to Win. The album includes a mix of upbeat tracks and slower, introspective songs, exploring themes of self-empowerment, love, and ambition. This album allowed the group to experiment with a variety of sounds and showcase their versatility as artists. In September 2022, BINI released their second album, Feel Good, showcasing a mix of pop, R&B, and ballad styles that emphasize themes of self-love, friendship, and positivity. This album reflects their growth as artists and continues their legacy of inspiring young people with empowering and relatable messages. Their breakthroughs came with their subsequent singles, “Pantropiko” (released November 2023) and “Salamin, Salamin” (released March 2024), which became viral, spawning countless dance challenge videos, which led to the rapid rise of group’s popularity.
Contribution to P-pop: BINI is part of a new wave of P-pop acts elevating Filipino pop music. Alongside other groups, they are helping shape and promote P-pop on a global scale. BINI’s music and performance style have helped them reach audiences beyond the Philippines, contributing to the rise of P-pop internationally. They’ve collaborated with international brands and participated in virtual events, expanding their reach.
